And so, so true about the classics. I remember being terribly confused back in school by all the male bonding happening in 18-19 century novels. Hand holding, kissing, weirdly intense conversations. In "Crime and Punishment" Rasumikhin's crush on Raskolnikov almost reaches Frodo/Sam proportions. The sister was totally a substitute!
(I think I've just figured out why most female charas in those books are so bland. It's because they are basically beards.)
