Hello, Merlin fans. I never ever wanted to talk about the mean meme, because, well. It all basically boils down to this.

Hi, I read it! Remember that time you were publicly humiliated on there? For your looks, for your attitude, for the things you do? Yeah, I probably saw that.

(I don't track and I don't visit often. I might have missed it. But there's a chance I saw it.)

Now that's off my chest, yay for me, and I probably made you feel shitty, and I'm sorry.

It sucks that everyone is sad and nobody's happy! I feel like when there's a divide SOMEONE should be happy at least.

Oh well we'll persevere.

Has something especially exciting happened over there? Because my FL is full of posts about it

Erm, I'm sorry you're feeling sad though :s

Thank you!

Nothing happened on there as far as I know, everybody just has a lot of feelings about it, and I felt like it was some sort of dark secret I had. Wasn't honesty supposed to make me feel better? Oh well.

Hmm, I think honesty can either make you feel better or feel like picking at a scab, but either way it's better in the long run. Er yes, that was a yucky metaphor.

You know my views on anon memes but I have no problem with anyone else reading them. At the end of the day, it's just the internet and if there's no fake death and at least one epic flounce it just doesn't make the dramah cut ;)

Haha yucky metaphors are the best.

There's a reason why it's anon, and it's not just so people can be unrestrainedly mean. As I basically said in my post, sometimes I don't want my friends to know I've read some of the things said about them. Sometimes I don't want anyone to know I've read some of the things said about me. Not everything needs to be aired out.

I don't generally mind negative opinions. When I was choosing a new phone, first thing I googled was "Desire sucks" to see what frustrations the people might have had with that model. There's plenty of positivity and support in fandom, I don't think an occasional catty remark cancels all of that out. But everyone feels differently of course.

No, you're right, there's no problem venting or having a WHHHHHHY moment and I don't necessarily have time for fluffy kitten and teddy bear fandom (I still haven't got over the hilarity of being flamed for - gasp - thinking that Gwen was something of a pointless character in S1 ;) ) but personally I just get wary of anywhere where the whole point is to be negative, because the danger is then that it all gets rather self-reinforcing and increasingly spiteful and vindictive as people feed off each other's negativity. And that's why I choose not to read there.

I don't think the anon comm itself has sapped my interest in the fandom; it's more the FL posts by people who've been hurt by it (and who often seem to have been attacked for fairly trivial reasons). Not everyone is in a place where they can stick two fingers up at what anons say about them on the internet and I get the feeling (I may be wrong) that, for a lot of people, Merlin is their first and maybe only fandom and that makes it even harder to deal with.

(You want catty remarks? You want snark and bitchiness and DIEBITCHDIE? Try motorsports fandom, where politeness - and often brain cells - goes to die ;) )

Oh yes, I don't read it always, sometimes it does turn awful. Though I do find it kind of life-affirming in a way. It's the only place in the fandom where it's at all acceptable to be anything but polite and cheerful, and it often surprises me that it's not just a constant stream of hate and insults.

I'm the same, I'm upset by what happened outside the meme because of it. And it's worse because the attacks are pretty much always, as you said, for trivial or simply moronic reasons. Remember that time when someone was attacked on a different meme for updating her journal too often? Good Lord, seriously.

But yes, this is why I'm not in motorsports fandom! You're made of the sterner stuff :) I couldn't deal.

Someone on my FL recently got into F1 fandom and she posted something uncomplimentary about Ferrari yesterday. Her reaction today is pretty much OMGWHATHAVEIDONE :p

One of the things I find a bit annoying about Merlin fandom that people get attacked for saying they don't like particular pairings, but I think that comes from being in a fandom with a) myriad pairings b) a culture of people saying exactly what they think about certain pairings and that being ok. Open discussion without people thinking they have to be nice and squeeful all the time is, I think, a little bit healthier and stops resentment building up so that people feel they have to post anon in order to vent
