There are some stories that really aren't meant to be musicals.

Well, okay, no. With the right approach, nothing is impossible. Free Enterprise with Shatner's Julius Cesar the rap opera comes to mind. But Jayne Eyre the musical was just plain painful.

Well, okay, it had some nice points, like Burns' theme echoing in Jane's song about seeing through Rochester's condescending jerky facade. Which, sure, was excrusiating pain in itself, but the rest was oh so much worse. The first act was concluded on the high note. On the left side of stage Jane singing "Oh, what dark secters are plaguing him?", on the right side Rochester, totally failing at harmony, singing "Oh, how dark are those secrets plaguing me!" and in the middle, one step behind them, Mrs. Roshester in her traditional bad wig is waving a fake candle and singing "Aaaaaagh!" You'd think reading yaoi manga would help me get used to clever dramatic moves like that, but no. Plus, no boy loving to get me through the corny sentimentalism.

So, this coupled with the lack of air conditioning and the (slightly terrifying) tearful, heartfelt atmosphere in the theatre caused us to flee during intermission. But still I am reasonably sure that it was a different musical from the Broadway one, not that I can be bothered to research any further.

Basically the deepest thought and emotion I took from that performance was that Blackpool Grand Theatre really, really needs air conditioning and that free tickets are the best thing ever for sampling sappy, bizarre shows and not feeling you have to sit through it and get your money's worth. Must get more free tickets!!!

I shouldn't laugh at your pain, but . . . *giggles*

"Aaaaaagh!"

Heee! Surely they should've tried to fit some boy loving in somewhere.

I know! they should have! The problem is, there are only two more or less sexable guys in the whole book, and I don't think they even meet at all!! Damn.

You went to Blackpool to see a musical and expected class? XD

At least the tickets were free! But yeah, pick a hot day and sit in a crowded auditoriu without air-con and it becomes torture even if you do like the music.

Right now, Seattle - but I was born and spent the first 18 years of my life in Horwich, Bolton before I could escape!

Jane Eyre the anything is bound to be bad. I had to study it in my second year of high school, and it's responsible for my utter disdain for Victorian literature. If we'd seen a musical version, however... I might've been more enthusiastic! ;)

Well, I had to study Russian lit, and I can say that Jane Eyre has one major strong point - it's so, so much shorter than War and Peace! And Jane's story doesn't begin with her commiting double axe murder either, although I'm not sure anymore if that's a good thing...

I had a sneaking suspicion that rave reviews weren't lurking behind that lj cut. But oooh, the end of the first act sounds fantastic *snicker*

Heeee, yes, good guess! Ah, it was all "symbolic" like that panel in Saiyuki volume 3 with the totally naked Kougaji, except with 100% less naked youkai prince, sadly...

I just read The Wheel, and wow. I know little to nothing about Saiyuki (as you might have noticed) but enough pimps and I will read something.
You should try and get this published, it's brilliant, i would pay for it and pimp it.
You should get paid for it, as long as it's friendlocked it's not pre-published. i was totally blown away. thank you for sharing.

I just can't tell you how happy this makes me! I really didn't think it makes any sense without knowing Saiyuki canon by heart, and I'm totally amazed you've gave it a chance and read this long long thing regardless! I never thought it would be able stand on its own, because it was just me dorking out over my love for this manga in a variety of ways. And the fact that you think it's publishable even - omg. *faints*

Thank you so, so much.

no, it probably made more sense to me because i didn't know the canon so i had to see links that you might have left out deliberately.
