Great Strikeout of 2007!
May. 30th, 2007 04:05 pmWell, in this current debacle the behavior of LJ is not surprising me at all. They had a firm stance on the matter till the advertisers got spooked by those "monster fighters" and started freaking out. Then of course Six Apart had to reassess their position in light of, you know, the possibility of losing money and being sued. And perhaps they thought that nothing short of a knee-jerk "look, we just press this buttons and there will be NO CHILD PORN REFERENCES on our blogs!!!" reaction would placate the advertisers. Whatever, it's their website, they can delete what they want from it, I'm sure TOS allows it and I'm sure pissing off some users is not as bad as losing all the advertisers. I am however interested to hear how they will handle refunding paid time. Or did they only scrap the free journals? That would make a lot of sense even from the publicity standpoint - payments can be traced, if anyone is actually interested in preventing crime as opposed to performing publicity stunts.
The funny bit is what the advertisers had to do.
Monster fighter: Hey, you know you have your ads on that free-for-all blogging web platform? Some people who use it write Bad Things in their online diaries!
Advertisers: No way! This can't be! We've never imagined some of the anonymous bloggers on the internet can write Bad Things in a semi-public uncensored outlet! We shall immediatelly disaffiliate ourselves from this horrendous website! Promise! Please don't sue or cause media shitstorm!
So, I guess their next step is attacking candy manufacturers for making tools of child molestation. After that - a campaign to bomb Japan! OMG, can you imagine what happens if those people ever see any anime?
